BALA is now a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. We continue to build the foundation for a sustainable and professional archival institution. We have begun accepting “emergency” collections – rescuing collections that are at dire risk of being thrown out or destroyed.

We currently have a climate controlled storage space to house the materials. We are now at a point where we need a larger physical space for our growing collection. We need space to carry on the business of an archives, to process, catalog and preserve new collections, and for researchers and the public to learn about this history. We are raising funds to lease or purchase this space so we can open our doors.

To support the important work of preserving and making available this legacy, please make a generous tax-deductible donation. We encourage you to become a monthly sustainer. You can also make an in-kind donation or write us into your will.

Lesbians have been trailblazers and leaders in almost every progressive movement in the Bay Area. They left an historical legacy that includes a more humane worldview and vision of society. Though lesbians made significant contributions to the LGBTQ community and mainstream society, their lives and work have remained largely invisible.
